Salerno Gallery is proud to present Roxanne Lillis‘ solo exhibition entitled “Barbeque“. This most recent body of work follows soul searching, researching, and bush fires that threatened Roxanne’s family home and memories, she began to question the vision and purpose of her painting.
“Thus my proposal for this body of work became one of ambiguity and experiment in subject matter, style and composition. The paintings themselves have become sources for the audience’s individual interpretation.
The imagery is at times macabre; pieces of raw meat and fish heads influenced by Goya’s famine still life paintings. These have been contrasted with burnt bushland to create a sense of rhythm and a surprising congruence.
The work depicts elements with which we are familiar yet illogical in representation. The rawness of the fresh meat is unsettling yet seductive with its rich colours of tissues and pulp. The desolation of the burnt bushland juxtaposed with the pink, flesh of fish, uncomfortable yet aesthetically pleasing.
Technically I worked on canvas, using various mediums, water and oil-based. My intention was to create realistic images with the illusion of strength and form, depth and space.”
