From a very early age April White has expressed thoughts and ideas through images. Throughout her childhood she filled sketchbooks with illustrations, which naturally led onto formal studies in Fine Art specializing in drawing at York University in Toronto, Canada. The following ten years were spent refining her skills and observing people, cultures and nature on her extensive travels across Canada, Europe, Asia and Australia. Inspired by her travels, emotional journeys, and a youth spent in the long cold winters of her native Canada, April creates dynamic and detailed works using frenetic pencil lines and thin layers of gouache, combined with scratches on clay board that becomes soft when wet. Layers are formed with textures, shapes and forms that combine to create and express both universal and personal thoughts and feelings.
April is now based in Sydney Australia with work being recognised nationally; as a finalist in the Adelaide Perry Drawing Prize 2011, Blacktown City Art Prize 2011, Waverley Art Prize 2011, Muswellbrook Open Art Prize 2011, and the Crocket Group Art Prize (2007, 2009, and 2010). White has also picked up People’s Choice Awards at Bent Art Blue Mountains (twice), and Newtown Art Exhibition.
