Salerno Gallery presents “On Film“, a group exhibition of selected photographic works by four Sydney photographers Tony Peri, Jeff Leaming, Jack Chauvel and Milena Dekic. All utilise and showcase the unique properties of analogue film photography to express four personal perspectives. Each individual journey demonstrates a different aesthetic and subject matter, combining to illustrate a broad spectrum of analogue photographic processes from traditional hand made Bromoil prints to modern slide film photography.
Tony Peri is a professional photographer who has exhibited his unique work throughout Australia. Specialising in a broad range of vintage and alternative photographic printing processes, Tony has become a leading exponent of the Bromoil process in Australia which involves converting a silver gelatin photograph into an oil pigment photograph with the use of brushes and oil pigments. On average it takes 3 days to make a Bromoil. The finished artwork is a unique creation and shares similar aesthetic qualities to etchings and painted works.
For this exhibition Tony will be showcasing a sample of images captured in Italy and Australia that have undergone the Bromoil process.
Jeff Leaming is a photographer motivated purely by passion for the medium and traditional processes. He remarks “I continue to photograph on film, process my own film, and make my prints in the traditional way, in a darkroom. I leave the digital work for the urologists and proctologists”.
The works showcased in this exhibition are created using the lith printing technique. Not to be confused with Lithographs, it is an alternative process that utilises standard silver gelatine paper, over exposed and developed in highly diluted lith developer. Each print is unique and individual.
Jack Chauvel is a professional photographer, who after picking up his first camera in 2008 has actively pursued and experimented with a variety of subject matter and techniques to further refine his craft.
This exhibition forms somewhat of a retrospective for Jack’s personal journey and experiences with film photography. From his initial foray into film developing to recent adventures throughout Australia, Jacks captures a range of scenes including emotive seascapes, chilly sunrises and figurative studies. Milena Dekic is a full-time professional photographer who specialises in wedding and architectural photography. Milena has been taking photos since she gained enough dexterity to hold a camera and press the shutter. Her work is focused on illuminating and showcasing human interaction and the things that we create.
This exhibition showcases Milena’s love of architecture and the history that is embodied in the buildings that surround us. Buildings tell a much bigger story than we think and this series explores that idea.
