Opening Night: Saturday 29th of June, 6.30 – 9.00pm
This year’s work by Clay Smith, The Trilogist, continues his triumvirate methodology. This tripartisan edition looks at the
newest chapter of Jargon Slayer (the original cult graphic novel), liquified life drawings, and a visual dialogue of first cultural immersions that an overseas sojourner embarks upon.
“Clay Smith’s art touches on nouveau illustrative aesthetics ingrained with underground sensibilities, wrapped up in a lampooning pasquinade. Stylistically, elements emerge from rock poster art, low-brow and anime. His work tempts you to skim the edges, or to conceptually dive deeper, leaving lasting impressions centred upon society’s entropic stench.”
Part 1 Jargon Slayer “The Game Player”
The artist has given a smidgeon; teasing us with the first part of the new chapter. Meet the new enemy, a Medusa-like snake-human hybrid. The complete chapter’s text in written form accompanies this piece. Anticipate its visual conclusion next year.
Part 2 Life @ Jugglers
Remediated life drawings offer a stripped tri-coloured palate with liquified torsos and backgrounds that are coy and play a counter-point to the traditional adoration of the photo-realistic nude. This is the first time they have been shown in Sydney.
Part 3 Cultural Tempest Reminiscing cross-cultural seminal impact familiar to the walls of Salerno gallery. Looking to a different time when the artist first travelled abroad.Winter and the fluff and viscosity of snow. Applying paint as a chunky pointillist, you are lured inwards to the textures.
