Opening Night: Thursday 21st of March, 6.00 – 8.00pm
Recollections brings together the work of five Sydney artists working across painting, drawing, sculpture and printmaking to produce works which explore memory landscapes; the influence of the past on our present lives. For this exhibition Tim Disher, Rachel Honnery, Yang-En Hume and Julie Johnstone create responses to stories and places, which have shaped their lives. Their work seeks to convey the ephemeral state of our changing memories. Each artist is investigating the way in which their journey through life has shaped their experience of the world. The Australian landscape, domestic objects, narrative and organic forms are used to express the conflicted sentiments we all attach to our pasts.
“As a group we are interested in the positive and negative connections we have to our pasts. These works consider how we develop an entrenched notion of home, childhood and place and how this becomes fragile and occasionally grief stricken over time. Our works hint at a sense of nostalgia, juxtaposing this with displacement, reminders of the passage of time and the impermanence of our existence”.
