Opening Night: Thursday 23rd of May, 6.00 – 8.00pm
Surely you Gestureexhibits the work of 7 artists who bring together a range of attitudes and approaches within the abstract tradition, investigating their own individual concepts of what “gesture” may be within the field of painting. Gestural painting – where the physical act of painting is key – is the basis of this group exhibition. The artists explore this concept for Surely you Gesture, with each one taking free license to explore this concept according to their own individual interests and twists.
This show presents proposals where Merryn Hull’s work offers the viewer her appreciation of the painted surface and installation in a contemporary approach. Heather Egan’srapid and fluid way of working enables intuitive work to respond to the environment.Alexandra Clark’s love of horses provides the subject matter for her interpretive gestural work. Vanessa Gandy’s oeuvre reveals nature’s unpredictability and changing elements as her palette and her composition engages directly with the environment. Randal Arvilla’s works involve intuitive mark making where addition and subtraction of material create an energetic oeuvre with abstract and expressive influences. Gabriella Kennard’s delineates colour with a hard edge and also adds a 3-dimensional element to her work. Chris Packer literally pulls painting inside-out, and his take on the gestural is to work against an instinct for precision.
Join us for the opening night on Thursday, May 23rd from 6:00pm to 8:00pm where the exhibition will be opened by artist and team leader of the painting department at the National Art School Sydney, Dr. Stephen Little.
