Opening Night:
Thursday 15th of May, 6.00 – 8.00pm
In conjunction with Head On Photo Festival Sydney, photographer Amoi Salakas presents an intensely personal exhibition entitled ‘George & Rita‘. Her workdocuments moments in the last months of her father’s life suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease. Fighting through the debilitating effects of the disease, somehow George manages to remember his beloved wife Rita, even to the end.
Despite many years of frustration and anxiety as George remained undiagnosed, and from not understanding the disease and its symptoms, these images highlight the healing and love that prevailed between husband and wife. Like rays of light shining through the darkness of the disease, they disarm its power, if only momentarily.
The medium of photography, in its truest and most unique way, enables moments in time to be ‘captured’, often which are not fully appreciated until many years later. Occasionally, we may be privileged enough to be at that place, at that time, where defence and pretence melts away and the inner soul shines through.
“We photographers deal in things which are continually vanishing and when they have vanished there is no contrivance on earth which can make them come back again.” Henri Cartier-Bresson
