Hendrik is a South African fine artist currently residing in Australia, dividing his time between Cape Town and Sydney. Since beginning his professional practice in his native South Africa during 2007, Hendrik’s work has been exhibited New York, Milan, Sydney and Auckland.
Having grown up in the political powderkeg that was South Africa during the eighties on a diet of European comic books, graphic imagery on the daily news and an incredible natural environment, his views and interests are as diverse as the complex and incredibly vibrant nation that shaped him.
Hendrik’s work ethic is one of both frenetic productivity and constant changes evolution of style and concept allowing him to avoid falling prey to routine or producing formulaic works, as any appearance of complacency is nipped in the bud by altering the media, subject matter or choice of input. This ingrained method of forging ahead via constant activity has also prevented him from becoming overly reflective or sentimental about his work, further assisting his ambitious forward momentum.
“The art I produce is primarily to reflect my views of the world to the audience, albeit in a manner that is often not a direct reflection of that world, but somewhat more interpretive. I wish to stimulate the same curiosity in others through my art as I experience through the world I see around me”.
